Ancient Egyptian Gods and Godesses

The Ancient Egyptians believed in many different Gods and Goddesses, each having their own role in keeping peace and happiness across Egypt. The Gods and Goddesses were represented in the creation of Man, bringing the Nile floods every year, offering protection to people, and taking care of people after they died. Some Gods represented small towns or villages, and minor Gods represented could represent plants or animals. It was considered importnat by the Egyptians to believe-in and worship these Gods and Goddesses so that life carried on cheerfully.

Isis
Isis was the Queen, as it says in her name – Isis is Egyptian for Queen. She was married to Osiris, who was King. However all was not well for Isis as her husband was killed by the god Seth. Afterwards, Isis set out to look for the pieces of her dead husband. She was successful, and then consequently brought Osiris back to life. They then had a child, called Horus.

Osiris
Osiris was the God of growing things. However he was, after he was resurrected after being killed by Seth, also thought of being the God of the afterlife and rebirth. He was the oldest son of Geb and Nut (Earth and Sky God/Goddess) and that is how he became God of growing things on Earth. He would wear a Pharaoh’s hat to symbolise the fact that he is the King of Gods. Osiris married Isis, as you already know.

Horus
In the Old Kingdom, people believed that Horus was the Sky God. He had the head of a falcon and they believed this because his name in Egyptian means falcon. He was supposedly the god of Pharaohs the when the Pharaoh was alive and that Osiris was the God of the Pharaohs when they were dead. Horus was the son of Ra. However, the Egyptian beliefs changed during the Middle Kingdom as Horus was now believed to be the son of Isis and Osiris. They believed that after Osiris was killed by Seth that was when Horus was born. Horus, then fought and killed Seth in battle.

Anubis
Anubis was the God of the dead and Underworld. He has the head of a jackal, because jackals were usually found in graveyards, as they are fascinated with the smell of the decaying bodies.  During mummification, the most important embalmer would wear an Anubis clothing, to honour Anubis. Anubis would decide whether you would be good or bad in the Underworld depending on if you had a good or bad heart. However, the Egyptian beliefs changed during the Middle Kingdom with Anubis as well as with Horus. Osiris became the God of the Underworld, and Anubis became Osiris’ helper.

Thoth
Thoth was the God of intelligence. He had the head of a Ibis because Ibis’ were thought to be clever birds. He was had Ra’s heart, because in Ancient Egyptian times people believed that your intelligence came from your heart. He was also the God of writing, science and magic. In the New Kingdom, Thoth was also thought to have decided whether you go to a good or bad place after you died.

Ra
Ra was the God of the sun. He would travel, on a boat, from sunrise to sunset with the sun on top of his head, giving everyone light. Ra would travel in a boat because that is what Egyptian people would travel in as they go up and down the Nile.
