In
early Ancient
Egypt
the Egyptians would be bury their dead in small pits
in the desert,
although the
heat and aridness
of the
sand dried
up the bodies
quiclky resulting in lifelike but dead bodies called 'mummies'
.
Later,
the Ancient
Egyptians decided
to bury
their dead in coffins that
would protect them
from wild animals in the desert. However, they soon realised
that bodies placed in coffins decayed when they were not exposed to the hot,
arid
sand of the desert.
The
ancient Egyptians, centuries afterwards, created
and learned a way
of preserving bodies so they would remain lifelike (the process included
embalming the bodies and wrapping them in strips of linen). Today we call this
process mummification.
